Fast Boat to Gili Trawangan from Bali
The main transport option to reach the Gili Islands from Bali is indeed by fast boat. There are three main ports from which you can sail to the Gilis: Padang Bai, Serangan, and Sanur.
Padang Bai is the most popular gateway to the Gili Islands, especially for people staying in the Ubud area. It offers the shortest route to the Gilis, making it a convenient choice for those staying in Ubud. If you’re not staying around Ubud, it might be worth considering one of the other ports.
Fast boat companies operating in Bali usually provide affordable shuttle services from hotels located in the southern areas of Bali to Padang Bai. This means that even if you’re not staying near Padang Bai, you can easily arrange transportation from your hotel to the port.
It’s recommended to check with the fast boat company you choose for their specific shuttle services and schedules, as they may vary. Additionally, it’s always a good idea to book your fast boat tickets in advance to secure your spot, especially during peak travel seasons.

Ferry to Gili Trawangan from Bali + Boat
If your ultimate destination is the Gili Islands, taking a public ferry directly to the Gilis from Bali is not recommended. This is because you would need to first travel to Lombok by boat and then transfer to another boat to reach your desired destination in the Gilis. This entire journey can take up to 8 hours, resulting in a substantial waste of travel time. Considering the length of the journey and the potential inconvenience, it might be worth exploring other transportation options such as fast boats or flights, especially if time is a significant factor for you. These alternatives can provide quicker and more direct routes to your destination.
But, if the water conditions are too choppy, some boat companies may choose not to operate, making it difficult to find a boat to travel from Bali to Lombok. In such cases or if you’re looking for the cheapest option, you can consider taking the “slow boat.” This refers to a local ferry that departs from Bali to Lombok every 60 to 90 minutes on a daily basis.

Flight from Bali to Lombok + Boat
Flying directly to the Gili Islands is not possible since there are no airports or landing strips on the islands. It’s not recommended to fly to the Gili Islands unless you’re already at Ngurah Rai International Airport or planning to visit Lombok, as it may take as much time or longer than taking a fast boat.
An alternative is to fly from Bali’s Denpasar airport (Ngurah Rai) to Lombok International Airport, which takes about 25 minutes and starts at $55 USD. From Lombok International Airport, you’ll need to arrange transportation by taxi or private car to reach Bangsal Port.
